A Technical Wiz vs Austrian Powerhouse | Zack Sabre Jr vs. WALTER at Night Two of PWG's All-Star Weekend Event back in 2017 (Match Review)

The Technical Wiz facing off against WALTER in PWG back in 2017

So hello there, and welcome to a new blog series, in which I am going to look back at some of the best independent pro wrestling matches of all time. So next on the list, I will talk about a match between two masters of their craft.

Of course, I am talking about the technical masterclass between Zack Sabre Jr and WALTER, at Night Two of PWG’s All-Star Weekend 13 Event, in Los Angeles California back in 2017.

Initial Thoughts

I knew this matchup was going to be a banger, just because of the idea of seeing the technical wiz that is Zack Sabre Jr, trying to do everything he can, to put down the huge WALTER, would be a sight to see, and with the idea that we never got a match like this anytime soon, so it felt special.

Also, these are two pro wrestlers at the top of their game, and if you were watching this match and not falling in love with pro wrestling, then I don’t think that this is for you, but was excited to see if the hype of this match was worth it.

What Happened in the Match

So we all knew going into this one that this was going to be an interesting match, and I was curious to find out how the hell Zack Sabre Jr was going to be able to take down the larger WALTER, but if anyone had the chance of doing it, it was the technical master himself.

But early on WALTER was just manhandling him, by throwing him around the ring. Zack did try to use his strength on WALTER, with an amateur wrestling bridge, but with no effect. But yet again the match started to get interesting when they got to the outside of the ring, with WALTER hitting some vicious chops on Zack’s chest. But he was able to stop the chopping fest, by stomping on WALTER arm on the apron.

With the match being about who is going to hold out the longest, WALTER’S arm or Zack Sabre Jr's Chest. They both didn’t let up, with WALTER’s chops getting more and more vicious, and Zack Sabre Jr getting more creative with his submission holds.

But near the end, the match started to speed up, with both men countering each other's moves. But after some chopping back and forth, and Zack Sabre Jr trying to lock in his octopus and guillotine submissions to no avail, WALTER’s took control with some big butterfly and german suplex’s, as well as a huge powerbomb, which Zack just kicked out off.

The match ended when Zack Sabre Jr tried to do that unique back pin on WALTER, but he was able to counter into a sleeper hold, in which Zack had no choice but to tap out and get the win.

Final Thoughts

I think that I enjoyed this match a lot more than his match with Ricochet, just because I think WALTER’S and Zack Sabre Jr styles work off each other better. Also, I like the hard-hitting nature of the match, as we all know, the harder WALTER chops someone, the better the match is.

But I love the finish, with Zack getting outsmarted by WALTER with the counter of his cocky pin attempt to a sleeper, and the crowd loving it. But overall, matches like this makes me realise how good PWG was, and why people wanted more matchups like this, and why AEW was born.

So click on the link below to watch this match, as you won't regret it. So I'll be back with episode five, where I look at the meeting between Adam Cole and The Young Bucks, facing off against the team of Matt Sydal, Ricochet, and Will Ospreay, at PWG’s All-Star Weekend 12 Night Two show back in 2016, so until then, enjoy my review, and hope you come back soon.

My Verdict: A+
